How to clean a velvet furniture?
Your velvet furniture is the key element of your living room: it brings an elegant and sophisticated touch to your interior. However, it can be tricky to know how to maintain this type of covering. Velvet, like corduroy, requires regular and specific maintenance in order to preserve all its shine. At Sicaan, we present you some tips for successfully cleaning your velvet furniture.
Velvet: regular maintenance
Regular maintenance of velvet fabric is essential to preserve its original shine. This material easily catches hair and dust, be sure to brush it regularly (ideally daily) with a soft brush to avoid damaging the fabric. Then, once or twice a month, vacuum it to clean it more thoroughly.
What not to do:
We strongly advise against using a steam cleaner on your velvet furniture. This type of covering does not tolerate excess moisture, especially if it is a silk velvet sofa. If your furniture is made of cotton velvet, you can wipe it with a damp cloth.
How to protect velvet furniture?
First of all, it is recommended to protect your velvet armchair, pouffe or sofa. There are water-based waterproofing and stain-resistant products that you can spray on your furniture. Then, let it dry for a few hours before sitting on it. This simple action protects the fabric against liquids and stains, making it easier to clean and extending the life of the furniture.
How to successfully clean your velvet furniture
Your product has one or more stains and you want to get rid of them permanently? Two types of cleaning are available to you. Dry cleaning is recommended for silk velvet sofas, since this fabric is very sensitive to humidity. Wet cleaning is only possible if your sofa is made of cotton velvet. Here are the different methods available to clean your velvet furniture.
Dry cleaning
- Sommière's earth
Known for its cleaning properties, Sommières earth is a powder that absorbs stains on velvet. It is easy to use: sprinkle Sommières earth over the entire surface and then rub gently with gloves, focusing on the stain(s). Let it sit overnight, then vacuum up the powder using your vacuum cleaner.
- Talc
If the stains are smaller and less pronounced, you can use talc. The procedure is the same as for Sommière's earth.
Wet cleaning
- Ammonia
If your velvet furniture can get wet, you can use ammonia to restore the shine to the velvet covering. However, be sure to take precautions: open the windows and protect yourself with gloves, a mask and goggles.
Mix warm water, ammonia and a few drops of dishwashing liquid. Dip a cloth in the mixture and clean the entire surface of the sofa or armchair evenly to avoid the formation of rings. Using a washcloth soaked in clean water, rinse your furniture. Finally, let it air dry, or use a hair dryer on the cold setting.
- White vinegar
If your furniture is made of cotton velvet, dip a cloth in a mixture of white vinegar, water and Marseille soap and then rub the entire surface. Afterwards, rinse with a washcloth, then air dry or blow dry with a hair dryer on cold air.
- Baking soda
Cleaning velvet furniture with baking soda is ideal for cleaning grease stains. Mix the baking soda with a little lemon juice. When the foam has formed, spread it on the stains and gently rub with a velvet brush. Let the foam act for a few hours and remove it with a damp cloth.
